How $8 a day is possible?

Since many of you were asking how we manage to travel spending only $8 a day, we wanted to explain it a bit further for you.

Fuel

The main cost is the fuel – that’s why other people travel with us and share fuel costs. We travel slowly and often stay in one place for a few days, so we save on fuel. Also lots of people are ordering a postcard from our trip – they get a postcard from a beautiful place, and we get the money for one liter of fuel.

Accomodation

We do not pay for accommodation because we sleep in the van or in tents – on beaches, cliffs, mountains. Often, strangers invite us to their homes. Poles living abroad often help us.

Food

The food we buy in supermarkets and eat what we cook – we do not pay for restaurants. For example, in Australia we ate kangaroo steaks because it was the cheapest meat.

Car breaks down

When the car breaks down – we repair it, beacause during the trip we have learned how to do this. And when we need mechanics help, they very often do not take money from us because they are impressed with our trip and want to help us and be a part of our adventure.

Shower

We have our own electric shower and 150l water tank on the roof so we don’t pay for showers. Sometimes we just use rivers or lakes. Between continents we transport the car on the ship. It is very simple.

Sponsors

We sometimes have sponsors – when we have to spend a lot of money on something. For example, the transport of car across the ocean to Australia and the US – sponsors paid for it in exchange for their advertising on the van. Logos on a car is advertising for such companies, which helped us to transport the car through the oceans. Our blog is the most popular travel blog in Poland – now we work as bloggers and thats how we earn money. And thanks to that we can be still on the road because we just need a laptop and internet to work. We published two books about our trips and they give us some money. We do photo sessions for companies or doing advertising clips in exotic locations and companies pay us for it. We sometimes also work as graphic designers and IT specialist (online).

Were you in Romania, too? Because I think I remember spotting your car in our little city in the west part of Romania…but I might be wrong.

I saw your post on Bored Panda. Great pictures – fantastic adventure. 😀 I hope you make it to Northern Ireland too, message me if you do.

We’ve been in Northern Ireland but only for a while. We will be back someday! :)

So basically you are spending $8 a day + other people’s money (your sponsors, revenues from your books etc…). It would be interesting to know how much are you spending on average (including the transport of car across ocean for example).
Great adventure, just try to be realistic. People can trust you, follow your example and then get burnt because they are not able to have your same sponsors or revenues.

Have you been in Germany? If yes, how did you solve the accomodation problem since wild camping is not allowed in Germany and most if not all designated camping places charge money for the stay?

Maybe they broke the rules? Shocking, I know. :)

    • http://www.busemprzezswiat.pl/ Karol, Busem Przez Świat

yes, we have been and we does wild camping in Germany – it is not allowed but if you choose place far from buildings, clean after yourself and you are not laud – nobody makes problems 😉

I think that saying you live on $8 a day is misleading because you actually live on more (from donations from others). I am currently living in a van overlanding across the Americas with my husband and we are spending about $50 USD a day average (some days it’s less, some days more). We travel quite similarly in terms of lodging and food, but there are a lot of little costs that add up like fuel, medicines, vehicle parts, visas, and checking out touristy things and sites.

I was surprised to find that there are quite a lot of people traveling like you do. I think it’s important to highlight that these big journeys/adventures are easier than you think and not that expensive- but it does take savings. We don’t have a blog, we don’t ask for money, and not everyone can get sponsorship. We just worked hard for a couple years and lived frugally to save up enough money. Advertising that you do it on $8 a day gives people the wrong idea- I’d like to know how much on average a month you spend, including shipping costs, even if it is not all your money. Then I think it would be cool to say that X is how much money we spend a day, but only $8 out of pocket.

A friend just sent me your site on traveling around the world on $8 per day. In 1972-73 my friend and I flew from USA and Canada, bought a 1958 VW van for $260 in Germany, lived in it for over a year as we traveled all over Europe, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, etc, Israel, the Middle East countries and on out to Afghanistan and back then all over Great Britain before selling it for $500 to some French Friends we had met in Jordan earlier. We actually did make the trip on $5 a day but remember it was in 1972-1973! Fuel was cheap everywhere we went except Italy where it was $1.25/gal at that time. But we traveled slowly, slept and lived in the van no matter what the weather, were lucky to have no huge mechanical problems. (I wrote a book about it, available on Amazon and bookstores called ‘Significant Journey’ (by Judy Williams de Chantal, published just three years ago.) I actually met the guy who is now my husband in Rome, picked him up as a hitchhiker. It was a great trip and even though it was way cheaper in those days, we still either drove or ate, being we only had $5 a day to spend! Our French friends who bought the van, traveled down to Saudi Arabia and there it died and was abandoned out in the desert. We had bought it from some Spanish kids who had traveled with it all over Northern Africa! That little bus really went everywhere! It was a very fun era with alot of who we called ‘traveling kids’. On Crete in one village I counted 17 Vans parked there with ‘traveling kids’! We retraced our steps when our two girls were teenagers and showed them where we met, where we had camped etc. in many of the countries we had been in many years before.
